Overijssel West
In April 1945, the Allies liberated the western part of Overijssel. Through Deventer, where the Twentol drama was a tragic setback for the resistance, the Canadian liberators advanced northward. On 14 April, Zwolle was liberated, thanks in part to Leo Major, who became well known for his courageous reconnaissance mission. Around the same time, Staphorst and Steenwijk were also liberated, with the involvement of local resistance fighters.
The route leads through the historic Hanseatic towns of Deventer and Zwolle, along stretches of the beautiful IJssel landscape. In Staphorst and Steenwijk, you will also encounter streets and locations that still bear witness to the wartime past.
