Groningen, in the northeastern Netherlands, played a strategic role in the Atlantikwall as part of the northern coastal defenses.

While the province did not host a major fortress (Festung), it featured a network of Verteidigungsbereiche (defense sectors), Stützpunkte (strongpoints), and Widerstandsnester (resistance nests) to protect the Ems estuary, Delfzijl harbor, and surrounding coastal and polder areas. German forces built coastal batteries, bunkers, anti-tank obstacles, and observation posts, forming a defensive line adapted to the flat and open landscape of Groningen.

The route highlights key bunkers, fortifications, and museums that reveal Groningen’s wartime history. Highlights include the Bunkermuseum Delfzijl, the Casemate at Eemshaven, and several preserved coastal strongpoints along the Wadden Sea and Dollard estuary. These sites illustrate the defensive strategies employed in a province where the wide, open landscape made coastal observation and early warning particularly important.

This route invites you to hike or cycle through the historic landscapes of Groningen, discovering the remnants of the Atlantikwall and the stories behind them.
