A permanent shelter has been set up in the casemates under the city. The Schuilkelder (Shelter) Museum aims to keep alive the memory of two 'air raid shelter periods' in the 20th century: the Second World War and the Cold War.
In the museum, you will find memories of the Second World War and the Cold War in showcases. There are volunteers, who will show you the way. Uniquely, the museum is hidden under a residential area. During World War II, residents also dug their way down to the shelter via self-dug tunnels, at the bottom of their cellars or gardens. Read and watch their stories on the website. American soldiers also took shelter here; their names can still be found on the walls of the shelter. Check the website for visiting hours.
