Hiking on the Liberation Route Europe

Where is the data for the trails coming from?

The long-distance hiking trails displayed on our website have been developed in close partnership with the following hiking associations across Europe: Wandelnet (NL), GR Sentiers (BE), FFRandonnée (FR), Maison de la Randonnée – GTA (BE), OLAT Wandelsportvereniging (NL), FederTrek (IT), Lincolnshire Area Ramblers (UK), and European Ramblers Association (EU). To complete the network of trails, Liberation Route Europe also used open-source data, for example from the Waymarked trails project. The label system used by Liberation Route follows national naming systems.

The data collected from hiking groups and projects have been carefully selected by Liberation Route Europe to follow the path that Allied forces took during 1944-1945 while liberating Europe from the Nazi occupation. The hiking trails follow as closely as possible the historic routes of liberation to connect the sites of remembrance and places of historical value.

Before going hiking

There are several tips that are useful to remember before hiking on a trail, in order to both enjoy the experience as much as possible and respect your environment:

Prepare your trip.

Before starting the trail, prepare a map and bring it with you. Check the weather ahead, hour by hour to help avoid any unexpected surprises.

Wear proper gear.

Hiking requires good, sturdy shoes, especially if you plan to walk for a long time. Ensure you wear the appropriate gear according to your needs and comfort, and depending on the type of terrains you are about to walk.

Prepare for any sudden changes of weather.

Prepare for the worst possible outcome of weather; from extra layers for warmth and a raincoat, to sunglasses and head protection from sun.

Water and food are important for a day of exercise.

Hiking is a continuous physical effort for your body. Staying hydrated throughout your hike is essential to avoid fainting or exhaustion. Bringing extra food which can be eaten on the way (Snacks, sandwiches, etc.) will also reenergise you and help you to keep going.

Be mindful of your environment

Depending on the area, the trails may also be home to animals and wildlife. Be respectful of their habitat and avoid disturbing them.

Leave the trail as spotless as possible!

Remember that the path is a shared space for many people. Make sure you do not leave any rubbish and that you pick up after yourself. Not damaging the environment around you is one of the key principles among hiking enthusiasts!
