This monument honours the Belgian Commandos who participated in Operation Infatuate in November 1944, to liberate the island of Walcheren in the Netherlands. They therefore played an active role in making the port of Antwerp usable for the Allied Forces.
he No. 10 Inter-Allied Commando was established in January 1942 and was made up of foreign volunteers. The unit was divided into companies (troops) according to nationality.
No. 1 and 8 were French, whilst No. 2 were Dutch. No. 4 were Belgians who were deployed to liberate Domburg, Walcheren Island. This groupconsisted of about 100 men and seven officers from the 1st Independent Belgian Brigade under the command of Captain Georges Danloy. They fought in Italy, the then Yugoslavia, and during Operation Infatuate on the island of Walcheren and further into Germany.
No. 5 were Norwegians, also deployed in the vicinity of Domburg on Walcheren. Their captain, Rolf Hauge, was wounded and later received the Military Cross. No. 6 were Polish, No. 7 were Yugoslavian, and No. 3 was a mixed unit of soldiers with German or Austrian backgrounds.
The monument commemorates the Belgian commando unit (No. 4) whichh left Ostend, a city on the Belgian coast, in November 1944 to take part in the Battle of the Scheldt and liberate the Dutch island of Walcheren. The unit landed at Westkapelle, near the breach made by the British Royal Air Force in the sand dunes, and made its way towards Domberg. The group successfully liberated Walcheren together with the Norwegians group on 2 November 1944.
