The monument located here in Balgerhoeke, Eeklo, East Flanders, is dedicated to the 4th Canadian Armoured Division.

On 15 of September 1944, tanks of C Squadron of the Canadian South Alberta Regiment drove into the town of Eeklo, announcing the beginning of its liberation.

Heavy tank battles took place in the region, but with the help of the Governor General's Foot Guards (Canadian Armoured Division) and the Lincoln and Welland Regiment (Canadian Infantry Regiment), the German forces had to withdraw and Eeklo was liberated.

The monument here was installed in 1990.

That same year, the South Alberta Regiment, the RECCE regiment of the division, was symbolically offered a Sherman tank whilst on on their Battlefield tour. The tank, located here today, was dedicated to all Canadian units involved and to the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, of which the South Alberta Regiment was an important fighting unit. The Sherman tank is named "Clanky", in honour of Major David Currie. Currie was the only person to be awarded a Victoria Cross in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps during their liberation campaign through North-West Europe. Clanky is the name he chose for his vehicle during the war.
