​​​Coronations, royal weddings, kings, queens, statesmen and soldiers; just part of the history of the famous historical abbey. ​ ​The Abbey is a wealth of English history and heritage including notable Second World War burials, internments and memorials.​

​​​The Abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage site, isit was founded in 959 and consecrated between 1065-1269. 

Throughout the Abbey, in different areas, can be found the graves, inscriptions and memorials to those who served during the Second World War. This includes memorials to different branches of the Armed Forces.  

Burials of two senior politicians who served in the UK Government during the Second World War can be found within the abbey. These are of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin who preceded Winston Churchill. The second is Clement Attlee, who served as deputy prime minister under Winston Churchill during the war and succeed him afterwards. A memorial stone lies within the abbey commemorating Winston Churchill. 

Memorials can be found to branches of the forces such as in the Royal Air Force (RAF) Chapel area, Royal Army Medical Corps stain glass window and stone, Long Range Desert Group, Special Operations Executive (SOE), Commandos, Coastal Command. 

The ashes of Hugh Dowding, Fighter Command and in charge of the RAF during the ‘Battle of Britain’ are interned in the RAF chapel and is remembered on a panel. Another senior naval officer is buried within the abbey, this is Louis Mountbatten who was in charge of Combined Operations. 

The US President from the Second World Warm Franklin D. Roosevelt also has a memorial within the abbey remembering him. 

Other important memorials such as the Civilian War Dead roll of Honour 1939-1945 is on display. Commemorative candle sticks remembering HMS Barham, a Royal Navy battleship torpedoed in the Mediterranean with the loss of 862 crewmen. The Czechoslovak Forces memorial is located in the west cloisters remembering those who served. 

One of the most important graves in the country lies just inside the doors to the abbey, this is the tomb of the ‘Unknown Warrior’ from the First World War.
