Den Helder was a highly strategic location, used intensively by German forces from the moment they occupied the Netherlands and the province of North Holland.

Situated at the northern tip of the peninsula, facing both the North Sea and the Wadden Islands, the town became one of the most important strongpoints of the Atlantikwall in the Netherlands. It was designated a Verteidigungsbereich, or “defense sector,” with its harbour and airfield used by the German navy, while air and land forces were also heavily stationed in the area.

For civilians, this strategic importance had dramatic consequences. Den Helder became a frequent target of Allied air raids, and repeated bombings caused extensive destruction across the city.

This route invites you to hike through the former defense sector, starting in the nearby village of Huisduinen, home to the former administrative headquarters of the German navy. Today, this imposing building serves as the Atlantikwall Center, where visitors can explore the history of occupied Den Helder and reflect on the military heritage of the Atlantikwall.

Along the route, you will encounter the Kroontjesbunker, a unique bunker of its kind in Western Europe, and De Nollen, a former bunker site now transformed into a remarkable contemporary art center. Beyond the historical sites, Den Helder and its surroundings offer a striking natural and maritime landscape: rolling dunes, open polders, and the expansive Wadden Sea stretch into the horizon.
