The 36th Texas Division Monument was inaugurated in 1988 in memory of the fallen people of the 36th Infantry Division 'Texas' of the US Army. It is located in Villa Comunale Sant'Anna, in the hamlet of Torre di Mare, a few steps away from the area where the American infantrymen landed.
The obelisk forming the body of the monument bears the coats of arms of the 36th Infantry Division and an inscription in Italian and English stating:
THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED IN PROFOUND HOMAGE TO THE MEN OF THE 36TH INFANTRY DIVISION FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE LIBERATION OF ITALY THAT BEGAN ON THESE SHORES ON 9 SEPTEMBER 1943.
Every year, on the anniversary of the landing, local authorities lay a wreath at the foot of the monument in memory of the military and civilian casualties of Operation Avalanche. 'Avalanche 43 - History Comes from the Sea' is the name given to the project commissioned to the artist Franco Palmentieri, sponsored by the town council, which is expected to be implemented over the next few years. The work consists of the construction of a monumental work in the maritime state property area, near the German Bunker. The project has also obtained the moral and official acknowledgement of the civil and military authorities of the State of Texas, who consider 'Avalanche 43' an action capable of building a bridge between Agrigento and the city of Austin, which already hosts the Texas Military Museum at Camp Mabry.
