This monument stands in honour of the Manitoba Dragoons, an armoured regiment of the Canadian Army who liberated Zeebrugge on 3 November 1944.

On 3 November 1944, the port and region of Zeebrugge in West Flanders were liberated by the 12th Manitoba Dragoons, an armoured regiment of the Canadian Army.

On a bluestone pedestal stands a rectangular bronze plaque in relief showing the coastline from Knokke to Blankenberge, two Belgian coastal towns. Arrows and dates indicate the advance of the Canadian army during the liberation at the end of the Second World War.

The plaque bears the inscription:

"Grateful tribute to the Canadian

Army which, on 3 November 1944,

liberated Zeebrugge, the last municipality

in our country."

The coat of arms of the city of Bruges is at the bottom right.

On the edge is written “To the 12th Manitoba Dragoons”.

The monument was inaugurated on 12 September 1948 and was designed by Bruges city architect Marcel Koeckelbergh, with the bronze plaque made by Gerard Blondel.
