Victor Emanuel of 13 Royal Crescent, Don Road, St Helier was born in Germany on 4 September 1870. He had been resident in Jersey for two years before the German Occupation began on 1 July 1940.

Victor, who was married to a Gentile (non-Jewish person), had not actively participated in the Jewish community life of the Island. However, he registered as a Jew after the First Order against the Jews was passed in October 1940.

On 16 January 1942 Victor was summoned to College House, the headquarters of German civil affairs in Jersey, possibly to further check the extent of his Jewish heritage.

It is difficult to comprehend the extreme stress and uncertainty that hung over Victor and other members of the Jewish community as ever more German Orders were introduced to curtail and control their lives. The effect on mental health must have been profound.

Victor took his own life by hanging at his home on 9 April 1944 - the coroner recorded a verdict of ‘suicide whilst of unsound mind’. He is buried in St Saviour’s churchyard.
